VALVE SEAT
The valve seat is a surface inside the body of a valve that comes into contact with the disk, which allows flow through the valve or working with valve disc to stop flow.

· Gaskets –These aid in creating airtight seals within valves. These are especially useful for filling out imperfections in machined parts that would otherwise compromise the airtightness of the valve.
· Springs – These facilitate rapid opening and closing of the valve to allow and restrict flow through the valve. Springs can be crafted from a variety of materials to accommodate different operating environments, including stainless steel, copper, and others.
TWO KINDS OF VALVE SEAT
Soft Seat (Metallic Seat Ring)
The metallic seat ring, containing nonmetallic insert, usually requires spring force to achieve tight seal. Due to springs, this design is not used in corrosive service. Even though this seat has a metal seat ring, it is categorized as a soft seated ball valve due to its use of soft material insert, which is in contact with the ball.
Metal to Metal Seats
For services unsuitable for soft seating’s, metal and ceramic seating’s are being used. In general practice, hard metal seated ball valves (typically stellite) are only used in the severe service condition such as high temperature, high erosion, corrosion or abrasion, slurry, etc. Metal seats are generally not bubble tight. Metal seats and balls are typically lapped in matching sets resulting in perfect roundness and fitness to ensure smooth operation and tight shut-off and achieving ‘Zero Leakage’. Metal seats come in different classes of Shut Off including Class IV, V and VI. Metal Seat and Ball are fabricated from base metals coated with hard chrome, tungsten carbide and Stellite.
Seat assembly consists in an outer metallic seat carrier with a soft seat insert, provided with outer O-ring to avoid leakage through the seat carrier and graphite back up ring which ensures the tightness in case the O-ring failure. The most commonly used materials are Nitrilic rubber/ VITON for O-RINGS, which is specified in American standard SAE AS 568. The moderately compressed section is located into a groove, presenting an O-shaped (circular) section seal and can be used as oil&gas water, air and another fluid seal.
The valve seat is the most critical component of any valve. Simply, if it doesn’t work, the valve doesn’t work. Consequences can range from minimal leakage or shortened life span to catastrophic failure. Depending on the media and environment this can have explosive and life-threatening consequence
